Marlene McKinney is a certified nutritionist with the American Association of Nutritional Consultants. She holds a Lifestyle Educator Certificate from Uchee Pines Institute in Seale Alabama, and a B.A. from Northern Caribbean University in Education with a major in Nutrition. Marlene has dedicated her life to teaching people about healthy lifestyle, reversing lifestyle illnesses, and eating delicious, wholesome, cholesterol free meals. She has a desire to help individuals live life to the fullest, meet their health goals and get the whole world eating vegetarian. She has committed her life totally to this cause.

My Life: By Marlene McKinney

All my life I have struggled with weight issues. I can remember my brother Cyrus and me exercising together, skipping, running around the house and cutting back on junk foods that my dad would bring for us. We made a decision at 10 and 13 that we did not want to be fat. Neither our parents nor our cousins were fat, so it was such pressure on us to diet at an early age. When family came to visit we would find excuses not to be around them, because we did not want to be called fat. Jane Fonda was my best friend. My sister Keffie gave me a cassette tape with one of her best exercise programs, and I burnt that tape out. If you came to my house in the early morning before school you would meet me exercising to Jane Fonda. When I got home I would never end my day without another Jane Fonda routine. I loved exercising, but I also loved food. When I was in my senior year of high school I was so determine to keep the weight down that I started a weight loss and exercise program after school in our school gym. Tony Roach, my then P.E. teacher had to agree that he would keep an eye on us. We had a blast and I became known as the health consultant at school. I would count calories and fat, religiously. If you had asked me how many calories were in any food, I would have no problem spilling the answer.

When I went off to college, there was no guessing as to what I would study, it had to be something I loved and was passionate about, Nutrition. There I found that I could control my portion sizes more and exercise was just as vigorous. I would run, do aerobics classes, whatever worked. I found myself being the counselor again, and we formed a group that was serious about their health. We hired a personal trainer who would come to the campus at 5 a.m. six days a week. Loved it!

When I got married I vowed that I would never let myself get fat, at least no fatter than I already was. So I would run, walk, do aerobics and the gym became my social life. However, after having my first child I was out of control. I was in trouble. I would avoid going out, then I made up my mind that I was not having it. I would have to lose the weight. So I started running. It worked and guess what? I found out I was pregnant again. I had lost all my weight and more and I was pregnant. Oh, let me tell you I was so upset. But then I got over it, had the baby then got started again. But somehow by the time I had had my third child, I was sick of the running. There had to be a better way. There had to be Something Better.

A few years ago I was having problems with my health. I was overweight, 220 pounds to be exact, borderline diabetic, and hypertensive and depressed. I shared my concern with my doctor and he told me what I already knew, I needed to make some drastic changes. I pleaded with him top give me whatever was on the market for the weight and against his wishes he did. I tried these products but soon found that the side effects were simply devastating. I would have such mood swings that my husband thought sure that I was losing my mind. My heart fluttered, it was just not worth it. I even tried the shakes but found that to be simply boring. After much prayer, I found the plan I was looking for.

My Aunt, the late Beverley Lockhart and my sister Keffie were very helpful in helping me make the needed changes. My aunt had just come back from a six week stay at Wildwood Lifestyle Center and she shared her stay with us and I was convicted that I had to make some changes. I did not procrastinate.  In addition I made 3ABN my companion. I found the programs so encouraging and motivating. It sometimes seem like it had my name attached to it.  

Following a easy and simple plan, I lost 70 pounds within 24 weeks. This was amazing and I was so grateful that I made a commitment to help others to reach their goal. I am not where I would love to be but I am far from where I use to be, Praise God! According to 3 John 2 God wants each of us to prosper and be in health. Philippians 4:13 tells us that we can do ALL THINGS through Christ who strengthen us. We have no excuses why we cannot lead a healthy lifestyle. All it takes is total commitment, trust in God, and the desire and will power to live. We need to make our health a PRIORITY!  I have met enough sick people to know that when we take our health for granted, it takes more than money and health insurance to get us back on our feet again. Sometimes it takes a life.

 Are you ready to make some needed changes and stop making excuses? How serious are you about making these changes? Make a commitment today that you will not cave in to lifestyle diseases. God has a plan for each of us, and He wants us to be healthy. We need to make a decision today! Do not let another day go by, without making a commitment to yourself and to your Creator to make the changes. Remember you can ALL THINGS THROUGH CHRIST; He will give you the strength. You will find the will power. You need to give your life to Him.

God can do little for the man who does not feel a keen sense of his own need and who does not reach out for power from above. Call on Jesus today.
